Six questions worth asking any mover.

The questionOur answerWhat to listen for elsewhere
What is actually in the hourly rate? One rateTruck, fuel, blankets, shrink wrap, dollies, floor runners, door protection, stairs, disassembly, reassembly and tax. All of it. A lower headline rate that adds fuel, equipment, stairs, travel and tax at the end is usually the more expensive move. Ask for the number you will actually pay.
What happens if you break my television? $1,000We buy you a new one, up to $1,000, whatever coverage you are on. The legal minimum in Texas is sixty cents a pound. On a fifty pound television that is about thirty dollars, and it is completely legal. Ask what they pay, not whether they are insured.
How long does a damage claim take? 2.5 daysTwo and a half days on average to settle. Ninety days is the industry standard window, and plenty of movers use all of it. Ask for their average, not their maximum.
Who is actually turning up at my door? Our ownOur own employees, screened and trained by our field managers before they join a crew. You get their names and photos before move day. Ask whether the people arriving are employees or subcontractors, and ask to see who is coming before the day.
What time will you be here, and what if you are late? 2 hoursA two hour window, a call about thirty minutes out, and $25 an hour off if we miss it. You do not have to ask. Ask for the arrival window in hours, and ask what happens if they miss it. “Sometime in the morning” is not a window.
What do I pay to book, and what if my date moves? $0Nothing to book, nothing held on your card, and no fee to change your date. Ask whether the deposit is refundable and what it costs to move the date. That is where the money usually goes.

Why the cheapest hourly rate is usually the dearest move

A moving quote is not one number. It is a rate, plus whatever is not in the rate. Two companies can quote you the same hourly figure and bill you two different amounts, because one of them charges separately for the truck, the fuel, the equipment, the stairs, the travel time and the tax.

Ask for the number you will actually pay. Any mover who cannot give you one, or who will not tell you what is excluded, is telling you something.

Then ask what happens when something goes wrong. Every mover is insured. That is not the question. The question is what they pay you for a broken television, and how long it takes. Texas sets the floor at sixty cents a pound, which is about thirty dollars on a fifty pound set, and a lot of companies sit exactly on that floor.

None of this needs a spreadsheet. Six questions, six answers, and the cheapest quote usually stops looking cheap.
